Fabrics and pesticides

Organic farming methods improve soil fertility, safeguard farm workers' health, and preserve the quality of our environment for future generations. In order to better understand why you should choose organic cotton, it is necessary to understand why you should not choose conventional cotton.

Conventional cotton is the second most pesticide-laden crop in the world - after coffee and before tobacco and epresents approximately 3% of all cultivated land in the world and this same crop utilizes 25% of the annual pesticide production, and 10% of the annual herbicide production. Not to mention, uses five of the top nine pesticides in the U.S. (cyanide, dicofol, naled, propargite and trifluralin) and are known cancer-causing chemicals.

The following information is presented here to give you an educated view of purchasing baby products, both natural and otherwise. Better choices come from awareness. Awareness comes from understanding and understanding comes from knowledge. We feel if you are given the knowledge, you will make better choices for yourself and your baby.

Skincare and chemicals

Of the 75,000 chemicals registered with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), only a fraction have gone through complete testing to find out whether they might cause problems for human health. Many chemical products currently produced in large quantities have never been tested at all. It can take episodes of workplace injury or wildlife poisonings before the Government will restrict or ban a chemical. The current regulatory system allows synthetic chemicals in to our lives unless proven dangerous.

Today, while scientific research worldwide is finding that every one of us carries traces of synthetic chemicals in our bodies, scientists know very little about the risks of these low level exposures. Some synthetic substances are carcinogenic while others interfere with the reproductive system.

The reality is: we do not know how safe - or dangerous - these chemicals may be. They are everywhere around us - in the air, soil and water, in our homes and in our bodies. Not a single child today is born free of synthetic chemicals. For more information on this topic read Racheal Carson's Silent Spring.
